Media Release: New judicial appointment to the Darwin registry of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia

The Attorney-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Honourable Mark Dreyfus KC MP has today announced the appointment of Mr Anastasis (Tass) Liveris as a Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) (Division 2).

Judge Liveris has been appointed to the Darwin registry of the Court and will commence on Monday, 5 February 2024.

The Chief Justice of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) and Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2), the Honourable William Alstergren AO, said that the appointment of Judge Liveris is warmly welcomed.

“Not only is Judge Liveris a highly qualified lawyer, but he is also a third-generation Territorian. He has demonstrated a commitment to the Northern Territory and provides a deep understanding and knowledge of its people.

“Judge Liveris comes to the Court with diverse experience. He has worked as a solicitor, Barrister and has held leadership positions including as a former President of the Law Council of Australia in 2022. His Honour replaces The Hon Judge Anthony Young who served the Court with distinction between 31 July 2015 and 16 August 2023.

“On behalf of the Court, I am delighted to welcome Judge Liveris to the Bench. His Honour will play a critical part in the Court’s commitment to providing access to justice to the people of Australia, and importantly, to the communities living across the Northern Territory,” the Chief Justice said.

Biographical details:

Judge Liveris was admitted to the legal profession in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 2002. Following admission, he practised at the Perth Office of the Commonwealth DPP and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia, before returning to the Northern Territory in 2008 when he joined the litigation and dispute resolution division of Clayton Utz. Judge Liveris joined the Northern Territory Bar in 2010.

Prior to his appointment, he was a member of William Forster Chambers in Darwin, practising in a diverse range of areas in Northern Territory and federal courts and tribunals. Judge Liveris was the President of the Law Society Northern Territory between 2015 and 2017. In 2015, he was appointed as a Director of the Law Council of Australia. He elected to the Executive of the LCA in 2018 and was President in 2022, becoming the third Territorian to hold that office.
